Booongo's third trip to the same tomb
Booongo is a game supplier. It has been creating mostly familiar-looking slots, but who's also capable of stepping out of the comfort zone, as demonstrated with the Sun of Egypt line, a hold-and-win series recognized for its jackpot ladder. The suns that stick in Sun of Egypt 3 only pay while the hold-and-win round is running. Aside from the Sun of Egypt slots, and the occasional slot, the games tend to be a bit repetitive in terms of layout and payouts. I put 380 spins through it at a 1.00 stake and finished at 985.70 from a starting 1,000.00, a return of 96.2%. That is why, at least judging by looks, I'm eager to see something slightly more daring with the launch of Sun of Egypt 3. Only 59 of those 380 spins paid anything back, and 27 of the 59 paid less than the stake.
Played on a 5x3 grid arrangement, Sun of Egypt 3 is a line type game, meaning 5 reels with 3 rows each. Wins on separate lines are added together, and each line pays only its highest combination. A winning spin is produced when symbols of the same kind land in sequence from the left on one of the 25 fixed bet lines. Sun of Egypt 2 came before it in the same Booongo line. You've encountered this type of mechanics before, most notably in any number of Egyptian five-reelers, but in this game there is an element of hold and win included as well with the sticky Bonus symbols. Super Rich God is another Booongo title.
What the pharaoh head and the mask actually pay
Sun of Egypt 3 features the gold pharaoh head, the ankh, the Eye of Horus, the lotus and the A, K, Q and J card ranks. There is a Super Bonus symbol as well, and in the base game and the free spins it lands on reel 5 only. The most valuable awards a 10x win for five of a kind. The ankh pays 8x for five, the Eye of Horus 6x and the lotus 4x, with each of the four card ranks at 2x. There's a wild symbol available in the game in the shape of the Pharaoh mask. A five-wild line turned up once in my 380 spins, on spin 22. It shows up on all reels, it substitutes for everything except the Scatter and the Bonus sun, and it pays 12x of its own for five across a line. Five or more suns landing together with a Super Bonus symbol open the Super Bonus Game, where every sun on the board turns into a higher-paying Super Bonus symbol.
Eleven of fifteen positions
Every time six or more Bonus suns land, the hold and win Bonus Game begins, all Bonus symbols stick, and you begin with three respins. Mine opened on spin 187 with seven suns in the base game, and it carried the balance to its peak of 1,142.40. Every fresh sun resets the count back to three. Mine reset twice before the board went cold at 11 of the 15 positions. So it all has to occur before the respins run out or until all 15 positions are occupied. Each held sun carries a value of its own, anywhere from 1x the stake to 15x, and they are all summed when the round ends. Mini, Minor, Major and Grand symbols land randomly among them at 20x, 50x, 150x and 2000x. A Mystery symbol can open as any of those four or as a Super Bonus symbol, and it only opens once the round is finished. Filling every one of the 15 positions pays the Royal Jackpot of 10,000x. A Minor at 50x and a Mini at 20x came out of my one Bonus Game, and the nine plain suns beside them added 62x, for 132.0x in all.
Two Scatter triggers in 380 spins
The Free Spins are activated when 3 golden pot Scatters have landed on reels 2, 3 and 4. I triggered them twice in 380 spins, the first on spin 28 for 85.0x the stake. Upon that, 8 free spins are granted along with a 2x payout. Three further Scatters during the round add 8 more, which took my second set, five spins later, to 16 free spins and 69.0x the stake. In the bonus, the stripped reels mean that only the four high-paying symbols, the Wild, the Scatter, the Bonus and the Super Bonus remain on the reels. No Super Bonus symbol landed in the whole sitting, so that round stayed out of reach.
Minty’s Closing Thought: Three feature rounds out of 380 spins produced 78% of everything this one paid me, and the best of them was a Bonus Game that went cold four suns short of the full board. Subtract those three rounds and what is left is a slow leak with a pharaoh painted on it.
The features did all the work
Sun of Egypt 3 feels a bit more lively than the usual slot coming from Booongo. The longest stretch I went without a win was 25 spins, ending on spin 375. It is not anywhere close to being inventive enough to get slot geeks like me go berserk, though. The features carried the session: 78% of everything I won came from the two free spin rounds and the single Bonus Game.
