Giant's Gold has been out since December 11, 2013. I put 460 spins through it to see how it behaves. Like all grand giants he's got his own golden goose, or at least her egg. The egg is the Feature symbol, and it only lands on reels 1, 3 and 5 of either set. That is the symbol I was pursuing all session. It came through twice, on spin 380 and again on spin 393.

The tale unfolds at the top of the beanstalk - the golden age of hoarded riches and oversized landlords. The giant himself, famed for his huge appetite, is most likely the best known out of those. The actual game, however, is played on two reel sets side by side, with the colossal one looming to the right and doing most of the yelling, and visually it appears ok, for the lack of a better word. Each set spins on its own alternate set of reels. It's nothing that will make your eyes pop out of your sockets, though.

What the wild transfer moves

The paytable's two working symbols are the wild and the Feature symbol itself, the golden egg. Under those two come the girl, the giant, the cow, the goose, the harp and the money bag, then the A, K, Q and J. The wild stands in for everything except the Feature symbol, and the golden egg only shows on reels 1, 3 and 5 of both reel sets. When more than one payline pays on a spin, the amounts are added together. Lines pay from the leftmost reel across neighbouring reels. The ticker names them one at a time while it settles up: mine read payline 64 pays 0.75 as the total for that spin climbed to 13.25 on a 2.50 bet. They don't carry from one reel set to the other, as each set is counted on its own, highest winner only per combination. The banner running across the top of that same screen was advertising the 100 free spins handed out for 40 or more Feature.

There's a wild transfer bundled in the base game. In the frame I kept, a stack of three Wild sits on reel 5 of the main set while two colossal reels stand fully wild, all of it base play at 0.05 per two lines with 100 lines selected and 990.00 on the balance. It triggers when four stacked wilds land on a reel of the main set, and that entire reel then turns wild on the colossal set before pays are worked out, so a single main-set reel can turn twelve positions wild. The same transfer applies during the free spins, with pays worked out after it.

How the eggs let you in

The free spins game is what this beanstalk show is built around. Eggs are counted together across the two sets, so a trigger can be assembled from either one. Getting in needs 3 or more golden eggs across 3 or more reels over both reel sets, and a trigger on exactly 3 eggs grants 5 free spins. My two triggers dealt 8 spins and 7 spins. Every additional egg adds one more, with 40 or more eggs handing over 100 free spins. That ceiling needs 40 eggs sitting on screen at once across the two sets.

Here you get doubled line pays on the colossal reel set, spun on alternate reels. The main set pays the same as it does in the base game. The bet and lines are fixed to whatever triggered the round, and furthermore, landing 3 or more eggs during the feature retriggers it. Neither of my rounds retriggered. That appends more spins to those you have left. The first ran 8 spins for 65.00 and the second 7 spins for 55.00, and between them they made up 17% of everything I won.

Our Minty Verdict: The feature is the part the game advertises, and across my run it was not the part that paid. Both rounds together returned 120.00, 17% of everything I won, while the single biggest spin of the session was 82.50 on spin 66, 33.0x the stake, off the paylines with no eggs on screen.

The base game still carried the session's biggest hit, 82.50 on spin 66, 33.0x the stake, with no feature involved. My two rounds paid 26.0x and 22.0x the stake. Those came 13 spins apart, on 380 and 393.

122 of the 460 spins paid something, and 69 of those paid back less than the stake they cost. It is a grinding game, and it took the balance down in steady increments rather than in one drop. The longest gap without a win ran 23 spins and closed on spin 136. Across 460 spins at a 2.50 stake I wagered 1,150.00 and got 697.75 back, a return of 60.7%, and the high water mark of the whole run was the 1,000.00 I opened with. The lowest it reached was 538.25.
