Rise of Olympus Origins is a 5x5 cluster pays video slot with a 96.24% RTP. A win is 3 or more matching symbols joined horizontally or vertically anywhere on the grid, with no paylines involved. It was created by Play'n GO, and players are permitted to wager between 0.10 and 100. It follows the earlier Rise of Olympus and Rise of Olympus 100.

The relics are the lower paying group and the gods the higher paying one. The gods are depicted by Hades, Poseidon and Zeus. The Wild substitutes for all pay symbols. The Wild symbol is the most lucrative and pays 20x for 5 in a cluster. In the base game, a winning cluster of relic symbols creates a Wild at the cluster's centre position, and that Wild can form new wins. 5 of the identical god pays 10x.

I really enjoy how simple and clear the Play'n GO paytables are, with no need for complicated coin value calculations or other antics. What you see is what you get. I played 300 spins at a 20.00 stake, and 29 of the 57 spins that paid returned less than that stake.

What each god does to the grid

The base game revolves around the Hand of God feature. That feature may be activated by god-symbol wins. The more matching god symbols a win contains, the more likely that god's power is to trigger. In other words, that god's power can be activated for every god win you get, and five symbols ensure it, whether it be symbol enhancements, extra wilds or symbols that get eliminated from the grid. Relic wins of more than 5 symbols charge an empowerment indicator, and a full indicator makes each power stronger. There are three god powers:

• Hades Every occurrence of a symbol on the grid is changed to the next highest paying symbol when this power is activated. Empowered, Hades converts 2 symbol types.
• Poseidon 1–2 Wild Symbols are introduced to the grid when this power is activated. Empowered, Poseidon adds 2–3 Wilds.
• Zeus All occurrences of 2 symbol kinds are eliminated from the grid when this power is activated. Empowered, Zeus removes 3 symbol types.

An empty grid buys ten spins and three chests

The free rounds feature is activated with 10 initial free spins if the grid is emptied of every symbol except Wilds, and all god powers are operational during the free spins. In the Free Spins, clearing the grid opens an instant prize chest up to three times, and the Zeus chest pays 1,000x to 10,000x the bet.

This is a high variance slot with a max win of 20,000x the wager, however, and during my session the best I achieved was the free spins, culminating in a 26x win. That round came on spin 25, did not retrigger, and paid 520.00, taking the balance to its session peak of 25,028.00.

Rise of Olympus Origins is a slot that can seem a bit lopsided at first. This is probably owing to the drop feature. It eliminates winning symbols without fresh ones dropping in from above, so the grid clears as wins connect.

My longest run without a win lasted 19 spins and ended on spin 24, one spin before those free spins. I suppose you could say this feature contributes some additional variance to the game - lose, lose, lose, lose, lose, lose...boom!
