Beach Life is one of the older progressive slots still in circulation. The line bet is fixed, and the only thing the panel lets you change is how many of the paylines are switched on. It was launched on June 15, 2006 and is still residing in the Playtech lobbies today. Three percent of every bet placed on the game, at every casino running it, goes into the shared jackpot pool.

Beach Life is a 5-reel, 3-row slot with 20 paylines and is available from 0.50, and it's a medium variance slot, rated 3 out of 5. The captured frames run all 20 lines at a 0.50 line bet, which puts the total bet at 10.00 a spin. So it isn't built on the sort of potential the contemporary high variance slots pursue. My longest stretch without a single paying spin was 13 spins, ending on spin 123. But the progressive jackpot does give it somewhere to go.

What the Diver and the Sun Pay

Beach Life is a beach themed slot with a laid-back feel to it. The sandcastle is the Scatter, and two or more of them anywhere in the result pay against the total bet rather than the line bet. The reels are packed with suns, sandcastles, treasure chests and divers. Everything else has to start on the leftmost reel and run along consecutive positions on an active line.

The top paying standard symbol is the diver. It sits at the head of eight regular symbols that step down through the beach snacks to the lolly at the bottom. It pays 500 times your line bet if you land 5 of a kind. The sunbather is next, at 400 times the line bet for five.

There is one wild, the sun. Five of them on payline 20 pay the Progressive Jackpot itself, provided that line is active at the time. It substitutes for everything except the Scatter and the Bonus symbol, and it also pays on its own for 2 or more on an active line, 200 for three and 2,000 for four times your line bet. Five wilds on any other active payline pay 100,000 times the line bet, and two pay 10. That payout is awarded instead of the substitute win when it is the greater of the two. The jackpot meter sits across the top of the screen throughout, and in the free-play client it reads Not available.

Picking Chests in the Sunken Treasure Bonus

The Sunken Treasure Bonus is triggered if 3 or more Bonus treasure chests land on adjacent positions on an active line from the leftmost reel. Only the highest win counts on any one line, and wins on separate lines are added together. The player is shown concealed treasure chests to choose from, one pick per triggering Bonus symbol, and the player chooses a chest, and a cash prize is uncovered and awarded.

The player chooses 3, 4 or 5 treasure chests, depending on how many Bonus symbols triggered the round, and each chest contains a cash prize. The single round I saw arrived on spin 30 and paid 140.00, which was 14.0 times the 10.00 stake. All bonus wins are multiplied by the line bet. That one round accounted for 7% of everything the session won. There are no free spins in this slot at all.

Minty’s Closing Thought: 250 spins at a 10.00 stake came back at 80.5%, and the one Sunken Treasure round in that run was worth 14.0 times the stake. The pick bonus is the only feature on these reels, and everything above it belongs to five wilds on a single payline.

It's a medium variance slot and nowhere near the contemporary high variance slots in terms of potential. Of my 250 spins, 81 paid something, and 43 of those returned less than the stake.

I never managed to get into profit during my 250 spin session. The balance bottomed out at 4,015.00. I ended on a 80.5% return, with the balance never once climbing above the 5,000.00 I began with, and the Sunken Treasure Bonus never paid much regrettably, 140.00 on a 10.00 stake.
