Examining the paytable I find the wild and the flaming sun scatter. Three scatters are what opens the Respins round. The wild is the Chilli Heat logo and shows up on all reels, standing in for everything but the scatter, and the flaming sun scatter only lands on reels 1, 3 and 5. With the scatter kept to those three reels, a trigger needs one on each of them. Then there's the money symbol, which emerges only inside the feature, and it holds a cash value of 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 7x, 10x, 20x, 50x or 100x the total bet. The value is drawn at random from that set each time one hits.

There's a Respins feature that unfolds on a 5x5 grid and starts you off with 3 respins, and any money symbols that land are kept in place while the remainder of the grid spins again. The normal reels fade away for the round, and only money symbols and blanks can stop on the grid. Now, any extra money symbols landing anywhere on the grid during the respin will also stay sticky. Money symbols sitting next to each other horizontally or vertically count as one group. The respin counter is set back to 3 again, and the feature carries on until the player runs out of respins or the screen is filled. A round can therefore run well past three spins so long as new symbols keep arriving. Once the respin feature is finished, the values are multiplied by their group's multiplier and added together; land a complete screen of 25 money symbols here and the group multiplier is x800.

Four Respins rounds in 400 spins

The chief attraction of this spicy slot is the Respins feature. It landed four times in my 400 spins, on spins 3, 64, 154 and 359. To enter it you will either need to land 3 scatters or use the buy-in feature, which costs 100x your total bet, and the counter resetting to 3 is the only way a round gets prolonged. The gaps between mine ran 61, 90 and 205 spins.

Group multipliers do the real work here. Each group is multiplied on its own, so how the symbols clump matters as much as how many of them land. 4-6 money symbols pay x2, 7-9 x3, 10-12 x5, 13-15 x8, 16-18 x10, 19-21 x20, 22-23 x30 and 24 x50, and the win in a round is capped at 10,000x the bet. At that point the round concludes instantly and any leftover features are forfeited. My four rounds paid 277.0x, 32.0x, 26.0x and 84.0x the stake, 838.00 between them.

Chilli Heat Spicy Spins is one of the better Pragmatic Play games I have played. The balance went from 99,800.00 to 101,110.00 over those 400 spins, a session return of 263.7%. I truly don't have much to grumble about, though the base game does tend to get a bit dull at times: my 400 spins at 2.00 a spin paid on only 87 of them and once went 31 spins without a win. Of those 87 paying spins, 37 handed back less than the 2.00 they cost, and the dry run ended on spin 338. The bonus makes up for it, keeping players on their toes as it's capable of producing large wins, and it appeared four times in that stretch and accounted for 838.00 of the 2,110.00 I won. The biggest single spin of the run was not a Respins round at all: spin 219 paid 942.00, or 471.0x the stake, straight off the paylines. The best of them was 277.0x the stake. That was spin 3, the third spin of the session.

It's not a game I see myself coming back to repeatedly, especially with the endless choices on the virtual shelves. The high point of my run was 101,196.80 on spin 219 and the low was 99,796.00. It's a volatile game, rated 5 of 5 by the studio itself. Just 22% of my spins paid anything at all, which is what that rating looks like in practice.
