Twenty lines, seven named wilds

The Goonies debuted in October 2018, and the question now remains. I put 470 spins through it at a 4.00 stake to find out. Does the The Goonies video slot still hold up? Those spins cost 1,880.00 and returned 6,020.40.

This slot is constructed using 5 reels and 20 paylines. Blueprint took the same licence onto the Megaways engine in 2024 with The Goonies Megaways, while this older build keeps all 20 of its lines active on every spin. It is all about the Bonus, where a wheel determines which of six features you play, and the structure is backed by an RTP of 96%. Five Bonus rounds turned up across my session, and between them they paid 828.00, which is 14% of everything I won. That is unremarkable. The other 86% came out of the base game.

On the reels, wins pay for 2, 3, 4 or 5 identical symbols from the far left reel on successive reels. Of my 137 paying spins, 81 returned less than the 4.00 stake. Only the largest win per line pays. Line wins are multiplied by the value bet on the winning line, the same arithmetic Blueprint used three years later in Jackpot King Deluxe Prize Lines. Wins on separate lines are added, and the wilds arrive named - Medallion, Truffle Shuffle, Mikey, Colossal, Super Sloth, Goonie and Inferno - and they stand in for all symbols except the Scatter and the Bonus. Scatter wins are awarded anywhere in view and are added to the line wins.

The wheel picks which of six bonuses you play

In terms of features, there's plenty happening in the base game. My longest stretch without a single win ran to 20 spins and ended on spin 121. Any spin can set off one of One-Eyed Willy's Riches at random - wilds laid over the reels, a reel packed full of wilds, three neighbouring reels turned into one Colossal Reel, Gold Coin mystery symbols that all display the same symbol, extra Bonus symbols added to the reels, or a guaranteed big winning spin. The Colossal Reel version is called Data's Colossal Symbols, and it forms while the reels are still spinning.

The Bonus itself comes into play when 3 or more Bonus symbols land anywhere in sight. Mine arrived on spins 148, 303, 361, 371 and 463. There's no payout for the trigger itself, and instead you spin a wheel that stops on one of 6 features: the Fratelli Hideout Bonus, the Skeleton Organ Bonus, Super Sloth Free Spins, Goonies Go Wild Free Spins, Inferno Free Spins, or One-Eyed Willy's Treasure Bonus - though any feature win except the Treasure Bonus can be collected or gambled up a ladder of the six features ordered by average payout. The five I spun paid 112.00, 260.00, 76.00, 236.00 and 144.00, so between 19 and 65 times the stake.

Two of the random modifiers are all about a losing spin, and if one of them comes into play, a scythe will sweep across the reels and reset the symbols to hand you a guaranteed winning combination. The first of my Bonus rounds came with the balance at its session low of 638.00. Or a cave collapse will uncover a win, and in effect, a losing spin is converted into a winning spin. Even with those two in the mix, 333 of my 470 spins came back with nothing.

Final Minty Score: Five wheel spins in 470 rounds, 828.00 between them, and the base game supplying the other 86% of the 6,020.40 I won. The Bonus is the part with the six branches and the pick screens, but on this run the reels paid for it rather than the other way round.

What spin 443 was worth

The Goonies is not all that poor for a licensed slot hailing from a seasoned supplier. My balance ran from 1,000.00 to 5,140.40 across the session, a return of 320.2%. There are no genuine surprises or inventive features here, and in that sense, the game is fairly middling; at the same time, The Goonies has plenty of what you as a player could want - a wheel of six different bonuses, a heap of random modifiers in the base game, losing spins that can be reset into wins, and potential of up to 1,000 times your stake. That figure is quoted for One-Eyed Willy's Treasure Bonus, which keeps awarding total bet multipliers until the booby trap goes off on the scales.

The Goonies is not a game I'm going to hurry back to. The spin that carried my session was spin 443, the biggest win of the run at 4,000.00 from a 4.00 stake, which is the 1,000x cap reached. Its max win is unlikely to draw much notice within the gambling community, but then again, far plainer slots have become player favorites.
