A Zoom symbol swallows its own 2x2 area
Zoom offers a single feature, and the layout follows from it. The Zoom symbol is the only special symbol in the game and the only thing that starts anything. The 6x4 reel region is divided into six 2x2 Zoom areas. Thunderkick released it in July 2016, two months after The Rift and four months before Turning Totems.
A Zoom symbol landing in a Zoom area will expand to occupy that area as a Massive symbol. That expansion is the trigger condition; nothing is collected or filled up beforehand. The reels re-spin with it fixed in position. The held symbol carries through while the rest of the field is redrawn around it.
If Zoom symbols land in four areas creating a square, they fuse into a Super Massive symbol spanning a 4x4 section. Four areas in a square means two adjacent columns of areas, so the block covers four reels and all four rows. It also re-spins. Wins pay left to right from the leftmost reel across 64 fixed lines, and the stake buys the whole set rather than a chosen number of them. Three massive symbols across all six reels yield six-of-a-kind wins on the set lines, and that is where the highest payouts stem from.
The main distinction to a standard bonus is that the re-spins are granted automatically by the expansion, so there is no stage to join, no spin count to grant and nothing to retrigger. It is not bought or chosen either, and the expansion is the only thing that awards it.
