The free spins here do not add a multiplier, they scatter Wilds: two, three or four symbols turn into the Wizard on every spin of the round, and the Wizard doubles any win it lands in. Above the reels a Mystery Jackpot meter runs on its own, triggered at random rather than by anything on the grid.
IGT has been issuing a constant series of land-based conversions, and Crazy Wizard, launched in February 2021, is one of them. I put 490 spins through it at a 2.50 stake.
Crazy Wizard is a 5-reel, 10 fixed payline slot. Wild Fury Jackpots and The Wild Life are IGT titles built on the same ten-line footprint. The reels are 3 symbols tall, and the slot is playable on all devices. Betting is on all ten lines at once, so the only dial is the coin value and the total bet is ten times it. Line wins pay left to right from the far left reel. The symbols have to occupy consecutive reels beginning with reel one for the line to count. Only the highest win on each line is paid, and coinciding wins on different lines are added together; the Crazy Wizard online slot features a randomly triggered Mystery Jackpot. Line wins are multiplied by the coin value of the line that made them. But it all comes down to the Free Spins Bonus which I will examine further below.
Symbols on the reels include 9, 10, J, Q, K, A playing cards, as well as 4 high-value symbols in the shape of the spell book, the crystal ball, the candle, and the potion. The spell book is the highest paying of the standard symbols and awards 1000 times the coin value for 5 across a payline, with the crystal ball on 500. Those figures are multiples of the coin value rather than of the total bet, which is ten coins. The Wizard wild symbol substitutes for all symbols except the Scatter and pays 2000 times the coin value for five. The Wizard is also the symbol the bonus hands out, since the replacements during free spins are all Wilds. Any winning combination it joins pays double. I caught that on a K line in the base game at a 2.50 total bet: the Wizard sat on reel one, a small x2 was drawn over the winning symbols, and the win box settled at 12.50. The doubling holds only when the Wild lands alongside other symbols, not on a line of Wilds.
One randomly triggered feature can appear in the base game of Crazy Wizard:
Mystery Jackpot - A fixed award triggered at random in the base game and never shared with other players; any bet can win it. No combination on the reels sets it off. The odds rise in proportion to the amount bet, and the current value sits above the reels. On the spin I captured, that meter read 1000.00, with the balance at 1,007.50.
3, 4 or 5 Dragon Scatter symbols appearing anywhere on the reels activate the Free Spins Bonus. The scatters count from anywhere on the reels, and none of them has to sit on a payline. They award 10, 20 or 30 free spins respectively. The Dragons also pay 100, 20, 5 or 2 times the total bet for five, four, three or two anywhere. Only the highest of those scatter wins is paid, and it is added to the line wins rather than replacing them.
During every free spin, 2, 3 or 4 non-Wild, non-scatter symbols are randomly replaced by the Wild symbol. The replacement cannot land on a Dragon scatter or on a Wild already showing, so the scatters stay available for a retrigger. The spin is evaluated once all of them are revealed, and three or more scatters landing inside the round retrigger it on the same scale — 10, 20 or 30 additional spins. My one bonus ended on its scheduled spins with no Dragons landing inside it. The round can be retriggered repeatedly up to 250 free spins in total, and free spins operate at the coin value and payline count of the triggering spin.
The Minty Take: The biggest single spin I saw was not from the bonus at all — spin 442 paid 132.50, 53 times the stake.
Crazy Wizard is a simple slot. Across those 490 spins, 166 paid something and 107 of the 166 paid less than the stake. What everyone is apt to ask themselves is - does it have any potential? Well, in the base game there is little to no potential, so it all comes down to the Free Spins Bonus. My longest run without a win was 14 spins, ending on spin 336.
The drawback is that the top line pay is only 2,000 times the coin value. For this you need a complete line of wizards. The Free Spins Bonus is where those Wizards are handed out rather than spun for. The benefit is that the bonus can be retriggered again and again, up to 250 free spins in one bonus. Reaching that ceiling takes retrigger after retrigger, three Dragons at a time.
If lucky, the bonus can continue for quite a while, letting players collect random Wilds along the way. Over 490 spins at a 2.50 stake I received one bonus, on spin 322, which paid 95.00 credits, or 38 times the stake. That was 12% of everything the session won, and the balance moved from 604.25 to 696.75 across the round. The balance ended at 574.00 credits from 1,000.00 — a 65.2% return. The low point along the way was 523.00, and the peak was 1,012.50 on the first spin.
Crazy Wizard has a 94.34% RTP.
